The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, CILT, as part of its contributions to the development of our aviation sector and for the capacity building of professionals and practitioners in the logistics, transport and supply chain services, is scheduling a two-day seminar. It will hold as follows –
Date – Thursday, 14th – Friday, 15th October, 2021
Venue – Tahir Guest House Place Hotel,
Time – 09:30am daily
The theme for this seminar is The Growing Number of Airports in Nigeria and the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM): Challenges and Prospects.
The Institute intends, during this seminar, to draw attention to the historic signing in 2018, by many African countries, to expand the provisions of the Yamoussoukro Agreements, in having a Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), under Agenda 2063 of the African Union. With Nigeria and 32 other African Countries being signatories to this economic programme, it is important that our investments in the aviation sector, whether at the Federal or State Government levels, including those from the private sector, should be tailored towards positioning the country to attain this goal. The size of these new airports, their closer locations and ease of access, routes served, connectivity and intermodal opportunities should guide the principles behind building them.
With the other signatory countries already embarking on incremental and organized developments at achieving this goal, Nigeria, regrettably suffers the absence of a national carrier, and would be missing out in the opportunities presented by the free movement of people, under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, which offers an increased air travel demand.
In terms of fleet size and connectivity, our indigenous airlines are still struggling with appropriate aircraft sizes, aircraft ages, fleets, and high taxes/charges. This scenario has resulted in the lull in aviation operating environment and the increasing insolvency of many airlines, as well as, the difficulties of those operating, in meeting the international requirements for long route coverage.
Based on these challenges, CILT is of the view that Nigeria may lack the capacity to benefit from the window for open skies and liberalizations under the SAATM, not minding our high population, healthy growth in our Small and Medium Enterprises and a strong economy. As we push towards greater access and penetration of the aviation market, we need a national discourse on this, to arrive at a way forward for developing this sector. It is in the light of this objective that CILT is hosting this event.
In your capacity as an active professional in the aviation sector, you will certainly find this seminar interesting to attend and lend your voice in the ensuing discussions. You may please register your participation via www.ciltnigeria/saatm. Participation fee is N50,000 per head for CILT Members and N60,000 per head, for non-members.. Payments are to be made to –
